Only One God

by David Toft

Augustus Braithwaite was born in the front passenger seat of a 1990 Ford Sierra.

We were driving from Dublin to Connemara, or rather Mary was driving and my skills as navigator were, because we had driven the route so many times, surplus to requirements. I lay my head back, closed my eyes and concentrated on creating a mental character sketch. By the time we reached Galway City, Augustus Braithwaite had a life of his own. By the time we reached Clifden he had a school, colleagues and a mission.

In a quiet corner of Sweeney's pub in Claddaghduff overlooking Omey Strand and Omey Island beyond it, the skeleton of the plot was drawn and the first flesh of the story wrapped around its bones.

Strolling amongst the stone reminders of pre-Christian Ireland and soaking up the sun's rays at the site of Dun Mor, the Iron Age fort on Irish boffin any amount of magic seemed plausible.

Only One God - review Longford news Wednesday 2nd February 2005

This sublime fantasy offering from first-time novelist David Toft is no single adventure novel, but a triptych of quests, sliced with passion and mystery, in which one man discovers his own ability to delve deep into the dark side and fight the forces he finds there.

Strange ceremonies are taking place at Dunsmore School with the powers they evoke ensuring riches for their number.  Headmaster Augustus Braithwaite discovers these rites are part of a web of dark doings that stretch back far beyond the untimely and mysterious death of his predecessor.

Half-term holidays find the school empty, but for thirteen young pupils and an assortment of staff including the cantankerous Grounds Man and a fragrant yet sinister Matron.  As ageing classics scholar Augustus begins to unearth the powers at work within the ancient stone walls of his Yorkshire boys' boarding school, he is swept into new dimensions where he must learn the rules as quickly as they change.

Toft invites the reader on a complex and engaging voyage into unknown parallel worlds and the cunning powers of the occult.

More hellish than Hogwarts, and with a grasp of witchcraft that Aleister Crowley would admire, Only One God's multi layered plot deepens with each chapter, forming a work of fantasy fiction in its finest guise.

COMING SOON:-

END GAME

Alice Craven dies in Somalia.

Arthur Molloy commits suicide in Dublin

Suicide bombers attack a mosque in Bradford, Yorkshire and a shopping Mall in New York.

All of the evidence for both of the atrocities points to the two deceased but there are two major problems. The time lapse between the two attacks was thirty-five minutes and both of the suspects were already dead.

Stuart Wilson, the head of Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist squad and Bill Rubek, his American counterpart are given the case.

Across the world governments are being destabilised by attack after attack.

The investigations of Wilson and Rubek's team lead to suspicions of the selling of souls and then to the terrifying realisation that suicide bombers have become a renewable resource.

On a fortress world the evil and powerful Leirbag, with Alice Craven at his side orchestrates the devastating attacks on Wilson's world. He must also gather twelve more souls around his table before he is powerful enough to return to and conquer his own world. From there, with an army of giants and the undead behind him he will launch an invasion of what is left of Wilson's.

Wilson, Rubek and their team must acquire enough knowledge and magical aid to thwart Leirbag's plans before he becomes all-powerful. They will also discover that they have two more powerful and unexpected enemies to defeat before the endgame can be won.

IN THE PIPELINE:-

A GIFT OF BUTTERFLIES

and

A LEGACY OF BUTTERFLIES

A two volume supernatural thriller.

Special agents Edward Hogan and Becky Forbes had attended briefings, read reports and studied personal statements. Neither had seen the phenomena in action.

Edward was worried. They were deceiving this guy. His partner had slept with him in order to further their investigation. If they were to become the bad guys, even in Mark Aldridge's imagination then they would be dead. He would kill them with no warning, no rage and no outward sign of emotion and their deaths, Edward Hogan knew, would be complete, if horrific accidents.
